According to recent studies, sitting for too long has been correlated to “increased the risk of heart disease, diabetes, cancer and even death,” according to Medical News Today. In order to counteract these adverse effects, office workers have turned to standing desks. Researchers claim that not only do standing desks decrease the risks of sitting for too long, but they also “increase your energy levels, alertness and productivity” by improving blood circulation and increasing oxygen to the brain.
In July 2016, researchers at Texas A&M Health Science Center School of Public Health found that workers using standing desks were 46% more productive than their seated counterparts. “The researchers hypothesized the productivity levels may have improved due to reduced body discomfort, enhanced cognitive function from physiological changes or a combination of these two factors” reports Orthotics and Prosthetics News. Clearly, increased productivity benefits any business but that is not where the benefits to the employee or the business end.
Many other health benefits have been discovered such as increased calorie expenditure, benefits to one’s metabolism and improvement in blood sugar and cholesterol levels. These benefits were echoed by Dr. Genevieve Healy, senior research fellow at the School of Public Health, The University of Queensland, Australia, saying that “replacing two hours a day of sitting time with stepping was associated with an approximately 11% lower average BMI and a 7.5cm smaller average waist circumference. In addition, average blood sugar levels fell by approximately 11%”. Improved employee health benefits a business in the most simple way: by decreasing the costs of health insurance.

Anti-fatigue in office jobs
Those who can’t perform their job sitting have found a way to alleviate the strains of standing. Standing too much causes aches in pains in our feet while sitting too much leads to bad posture and back discomfort. Researchers advise office workers to find the appropriate balance. Standing just a couple of hours per day can yield significant improvements. In order to avoid suffering from problems related to standing up too long, office workers should couple their sit-stand desk with anti-fatigue mats.
