Amazon Go and the Future of Grocery Shopping

Amazon has been a leader in innovation when it comes to improving the shopping experience for the past two decades. Their improvements to the way we as consumers shop has led the industry – and they keep on improving the introduction of Amazon Go.

Amazon Go is essentially a grocery store with a catch – there are no check-out lines. There’s no need to wait in line for the next available cashier or finding something for entertainment while in line. You just walk in, pick up what you need, and leave. Amazon claims this is possible through new computer learning technology that charges you for whichever item you pick up and leave with. Once you leave, Amazon will charge your account what you picked up. This is the future of grocery stores.

Amazon’s commitment to customer service is unparalleled. This dedication to make shopping easy, comfortable, and fun is one of the reasons they are one of the top retailers in the world. They aim to provide the best shopping experience to their consumers. Like Amazon, The Matworks is also committed to providing the best products with the best customer service.

The Matworks and our wide range of products like our LVTs and entrance mats provide a first impression that is second to none. They can aid Amazon and their transition into physical stores by providing an appealing shopping experience.

Consumers will feel more comfortable stepping onto one of our grocery mats. Our products can make the consumers want to come back to a place they feel is aesthetically pleasing as well as comfortable. Not only do they benefit the consumer, but the store as well by trapping in dirt and debris from the outside and being easy to clean. And with safety as another value that we uphold company-wide, our mats prevent slips and falls.

These Amazon Go stores will retain the same standards to customer service as their online storefront. This all starts with the floors. It is the first thing the consumer experiences in the store. A comfortable and attractive walking service will make the shopping experience that much better.

Amazon Go’s increasing interest and praise is a sign that the grocery store is far from dying, it’s at a resurgence. Things can only look up for the industry and The Matworks is catching this wave.

Using Technology To Improve Customer Service

In today’s ever changing world of business, it is becoming more important than ever to use technological developments to improve your organization’s overall efficiency & delivered quality. Here at Matworks we have taken the initiative to update our communications networks to improve the quality of customer service we are delivering. On the reasoning behind this improvement, Vice President of Operations, Jared Agan states, “We were responding to the noise level rather than knowing what was going on and conducting business in a proactive way. We wanted to establish the company as one with honesty, integrity, and a focus on customer service”.mobile-devices

In January 2016 we adopted the mobile platform workflow solutions provider, ProntoForms into our day to day operations. This technology allows us to visualize data, view reports, and analyze performance and compliance information in near-real time. Thanks to this framework, we are able to schedule sales and support more efficiently; teams are able to schedule visits at the right locations at the right time, address customer needs in a more responsive way, and view customer updates and engage appropriately in real-time.

Agan explains, “The system has helped us move from assumptions and hunches to using actual data to make decisions”. As a whole, the ProntoForms system has helped us improve service quality, increase transparency, and raise customer satisfaction scores. Since the adoption of this technology we have been able to reduce overdue service calls by 75% while cutting costs and improving efficiency through improved tracking and review systems. The use of this technology has been nothing but beneficial to our business and we don’t plan on stopping here, Matworks is currently in the first phase of our mobility initiative. In the future we plan on expanding the system to gather operations data from the field and to better tie together the management team. Overall, we care about being responsive externally and internally so we can deliver the highest quality product in the most efficient and effective manner.

Changing Floor Trends in the Hospitality Industry

The hospitality industry has generally relied on carpet for their hotel rooms and sometimes even for their lobbies. Some of the reasons are that carpets are cheaper than many flooring alternatives while providing a comforting home feeling and reducing noise. Over the past two years, economy hotels such as Red Roof Inn and Value Place, have started to switch their flooring from carpet to luxury vinyl tiles (LVT). According to Floor Daily, this floor trend is also present in upper midscale hotel chains such as Holiday Inn and Courtyard.

LVT vs. CARPET FLOOR TRENDS

Hotel managers have shifted their focus from the cheap alternative to the longer lasting, more resilient one. While carpets have a lifespan of about six years, LVT can last anywhere from 12 to 20 years, according to Floor Trends Magazine. Even though LVT is more expensive than carpet, the increased lifespan of LVT more than makes up for the difference in initial costs. Additionally, the less frequent need for replacement leads to a reduction in the costs of installation as well as a reduction in the lost revenue due to installation.

Product Spotlight: The Matworks provides LVT infused with MicroCeramicTM silica beads. This new technology makes our product more durable and allows us to provide a 15 year limited warranty on the LVT. Furthermore, Matworks’ Click LVT does not use adhesives and can be installed over existing floors. This allows for faster installation than adhesive-based products and makes the floor ready for same day use.

More importantly though, consumer tastes are changing. According to the senior director of global designs for Marriott International, Nigel Hatcher, guests perceive LVT to be cleaner than carpets. LVT also provides a more spacious feel, which is particularly important to millennials.

Product Spotlight: Not only is there the perception of cleaner floors with LVT but it is in fact so thanks to Nano-SilverTM technology. LVT imbued with nano-silver particles provides for a reduced presence of viruses, fungi, molds, and bacteria on the floors.

Housekeeping also benefits from LVT given that it is much easier to maintain. Marriot found that housekeepers prefer LVT to carpet because it is easier to clean, requiring only a damp mop as opposed to the labor intensive vacuuming and spot cleaning of carpets. Easier floor maintenance leads to a cleaner hotel. LVT is also scratch and stain resistant, further improving the look and reputation of a hotel.

That being said, LVT may not be the best solution for every hotel. A hotel’s use of LVT will depend on its geographic location. Due to LVT’s moisture resistance, LVT has an advantage over carpet in warmer climates, which are prone to moisture. Yet, hotels in the north, such as ski resorts will likely prefer the “warmer” carpet feel.

LVT vs. WOOD FLOOR TRENDS

LVT is a good alternative for hotels that want to upgrade their look but cannot afford the higher prices of wood and tile. The wood look has remained a popular look. Yet, aside from being an expensive option, wood does not provide good noise attenuation. In contrast, LVT when installed over underlayment provides great sound abatement.

Finally, while wood has remained very popular, the current trend leans towards natural and wood graining in gray and taupe colors. While these colors and textures may not be present in nature, LVT provides the client the ability to customize the look of any hotel to the minute preferences of its guests.

Category Spotlight: Grocery Flooring Options

With so many surface areas to cover and limitless product options, the process of identifying the right solution can be time consuming and often confusing. While we always recommend hiring an expert to help inform and guide the conversation, it is helpful to know which areas of a retail environment call for certain products. For this example, we are using a grocery store to highlight the various areas and usage of flooring materials.

Why is it so important to know what product goes where? As we’ve discussed, most slip and fall claims, which are extremely costly and lead to serious injuries, are the result of not having the right flooring system in place. And also, the right flooring can reduce employee fatigue and lead to better productivity.

Area: Entrance

Let’s start with the entrance, which could be an entire series of its own but for this example we’ll focus on a grocery store with above average traffic in an area where moisture is a factor.

Option: Grid system for the vestibule with walk-off mats (available with your store’s logo) in the interior entrance to minimize dirt, debris and moisture entering the store.

Areas: Produce, Meat & Seafood Counters, Deli

Produce areas can be wet and therefore slippery. Choosing a system that is easy to maintain, water resistant and offers ample drainage is critical. Mats without proper drainage will take longer to dry and wear out faster.

Option: Light Cuisine does double-duty as an anti-fatigue mat as well as an anti-slip option. A favorite for wet areas because of its slip resistant qualities and low maintenance cleaning.

Area: Cashier Stands

Employees can stand for long periods of time, leading to fatigue and stress on their legs and backs. This fatigue can cause reduced productivity, higher workers compensation claims and even injuries.

Option: Luxury King is an anti-fatigue product available as mats or rolled goods suitable for dry areas.

Area: Pharmacy

Like cashiers, pharmacists stand for many hours at a time while filling prescriptions and working with customers. Unlike cash registers though, the work area for pharmacy employees often covers the whole pharmacy area and may require a larger option than a smaller mat.

Option: Preference Eze is the best of both worlds – a durable carpet top with foam backing for anti-fatigue purposes. Designed and manufactured exclusively by the Matworks, this product is a favorite of pharmacists.

These are just a few areas to think about when considering flooring options in a grocery store. Factors such as geography, foot traffic, maintenance and store layout also need to be analyzed when making purchasing decisions.

Quality is in the Details: Hand Assembled Walk-Off Mats

Since its inception in 1966, the Matworks has focused on delivering quality products and services to our customers while adopting the latest innovations and technologies to improve and enhance our offerings.

One such example is the attention to detail and craftsmanship we employ when creating rubber edged walk-off mats. These mats are custom cut, edged and sewn by hand in our facility. Each mat is given individual attention and inspected by our knowledgeable staff, many of which have been with us for more than 20 years.

While ensuring a high-quality product is our primary goal, this approach also offers the customer a high level of flexibility in sizes, configurations and backing types. Unlike mass-produced mats, we can determine the right edging and bevel needed for a given application and customize a tailored solution. This is typically much faster than ordering from the manufacturer and gives us control over the quality of the output.

Maintaining these high standards for our products is something we stand by and will continue as our business grows and evolves.
