Gallant Wall System: Moving Beyond Flooring

The Matworks is continuously looking for ways to address pain points with our customers, oftentimes not related to flooring but rather other areas of retail operations. One such example is our recent innovation of the Gallant Wall System. This alternative to drywall offers a range of flexibility rarely found in commercial applications.

Why should a retailer consider the innovative Gallant Wall system? Here are the top reasons why we are testing this product and anticipate more interest from customers:

• Easier to Install: Can be installed by one person where drywall requires at least two people to hold it in place.

• Faster Installation: Lead installer with 30 years of drywall experience indicated that the wall at the test site (a national discount retailer with more than 11,000 locations) would have taken three days to install drywall versus the one day it actually took to install the Gallant Wall system.

• Handling & Storage: Drywall requires heavy machinery, more manpower and takes up more space to store. Gallant Wall system arrives on a crate that can easily be moved around by a single person using a forklift.

• Gallant Wall is a finished product. Simply install and done. Eliminates
patching, taping, sanding and painting.

• Does not require special temperature conditions to be installed while drywall requires water and appropriate temperature conditions for the drywall compound.

• Strong and Durable Product: Eliminates plywood framing construction typically needed for pharmacies, cash rooms, and other special rooms.

• Reduces waste since the cut panels are reused at the ends.

Here’s a quick comparison of drywall vs. Gallant:

Quality is in the Details: Hand Assembled Walk-Off Mats

Since its inception in 1966, the Matworks has focused on delivering quality products and services to our customers while adopting the latest innovations and technologies to improve and enhance our offerings.

One such example is the attention to detail and craftsmanship we employ when creating rubber edged walk-off mats. These mats are custom cut, edged and sewn by hand in our facility. Each mat is given individual attention and inspected by our knowledgeable staff, many of which have been with us for more than 20 years.

While ensuring a high-quality product is our primary goal, this approach also offers the customer a high level of flexibility in sizes, configurations and backing types. Unlike mass-produced mats, we can determine the right edging and bevel needed for a given application and customize a tailored solution. This is typically much faster than ordering from the manufacturer and gives us control over the quality of the output.

Maintaining these high standards for our products is something we stand by and will continue as our business grows and evolves.

Entrance Mats: A Simple Way to Reduce Interior Maintenance Costs

An estimated 80% of soil brought into a facility is carried in on our shoes, and according to one study, the cost to remove dirt and debris is 63 cents per customer per year. Even a cursory estimate for a mid-sized retailer shows floor maintenance costs are a high dollar expense. So without reducing the amount of foot traffic entering your store, how can your organization save on maintenance costs?

Most experts agree – an effective entrance matting system is the right solution to not only reduce maintenance costs but also to improve safety, protect your investment in interior flooring, improve your image, create a better first impression and achieve better indoor air quality.

With so many products, configurations and considerations today it’s hard to know what the right entrance system is, but here are a few key details the Matworks has learned after almost 50 years in the commercial flooring industry:

Size Matters

  • For high traffic entrances, the larger the matting system the better
  • Providing a longer mat – no matter the size of the entrance – means more surface area to capture dirt, debris and moisture
  • A good rule of thumb for running length is as follows:

Weather Conditions # of Walking Steps # of Feet Based on an Average 30 inch Pace
Snow 10-12 25 – 30 feet
Rain 8-10 20 – 25 feet
Dry 6-8 15 – 20 feet

Matting Styles

  • Walk-off mats are an economical and easy way to maintain your first line of defense; these solutions offer flexibility without sacrificing quality
  • Scraper mats are typically constructed of high-density polypropylene fiber, which is coarser and traps more dirt and debris. These products can be surface-mounted or recessed and come in tiles for easy maintenance and replacement.
  • Grid systems (also known as drop-through systems) are the workhorse solution for high-traffic entrances or in environments where moisture is a consideration. Typically constructed from a combination of aluminum and high-density polypropylene carpet or PVC, these systems can withstand heavy loads and are useful indoors or out.

Through our experience, we recognize there are many factors to evaluate when determining what type of entrance system or combination of systems, is appropriate. For more information about the solutions we provide, visit the Entrance Solutions section of our site.

The True Cost of Slips and Falls

Slips and falls are a major concern for retailers and businesses. According to a report by Zurich North America that focuses on hazards related to snow and ice, the average cost of a slip and fall to an organization is $30,670. In addition to claims by consumers there are also a high number of incidents reported by workers. For a retailer with thousands of visitors per year and hundreds of employees, these claims can cost millions. The good news is the number of claims can be reduced if the right maintenance and flooring plan is in place.

We recommend the following best practices when considering how to mitigate risk in your entrance or lobby:

1. Be sure to have an expert evaluate all of the factors that contribute to risks such as moisture, floor surface materials, overhead coverage and treatment of transitional areas between parking areas and the entrance.

2. Vestibules should have recessed grid systems or permanent carpet installed that act as scrapers on shoe bottoms to remove dirt, debris and moisture.

3. Quality matting, inlaid carpet tiles or permanent carpet tiles with beveled edges should be provided at the interior door threshold and extend 15 to 20 feet into the building to provide additional wiping of shoe bottoms.

4. Maintenance is as critical as the products or systems chosen.

5. The use of caution or wet floor signs is highly recommended to give employees and consumers notice that the floor is slippery when wet. The lack of notice is mentioned often with employee and consumer claims and may cause claim reserves to be increased significantly.

How does a flooring company get into cleaning?

What is TEC?

Impressed with the service, attention to detail and professionalism we had been providing for their flooring products and installations, our customers began to ask if we would like to manage the cleaning in their stores as well. Given their history with Matworks, they felt we could provide a better product. Additionally, because we had been designing and installing flooring and entrances throughout the country for nearly 50 years, we knew first-hand the impact the right solution had on safety and maintenance costs.

Matworks made the decision in 2007 to invest in starting a full service turn-key service division, however, we did not want to be like everyone else…we truly wanted to differentiate ourselves, and we have.

Research told us:

  • Service levels promised but are not delivered
  • Work is not completed correctly or on time
  • Customers lost trust
  • There is not enough visibility in what happens in the field
  • The right data is not provided to the customers
  • Customers didn’t know what they were paying for

Built from the same principles that led Matworks to be a leading provider in flooring products for national retailers, TEC began. This simple acronym defines the key principles we operate by: Transparency, Ethics, and Committed Account Supervision.

We recognize that an immaculate facility has a critical impact on the customers’ experience, employees’ satisfaction and most importantly – the brand.

Today, the Matworks TEC division is represented through three key services: Cleaning, Installation and Concrete Care. We are fortunate to work with many major retailers throughout the US, currently we service over a thousand sites. The TEC division represents nearly half the company revenue and continues to be a major focus in our future growth.

What is TEC?

Transparency – Open Books

Honesty is one of our core values, and we share our internal operational costs with our customers. From our initial financial models prepared during the bidding phase through ongoing service operations, the Matworks provides a detailed planned versus actual reporting and analysis.

Ethics – We Deliver What We Promise…And We Don’t Charge For What Don’t Deliver.

With nearly 50 years servicing retail, our reputation is who we are. We create value in our relationships by focusing on exemplary service delivery – NOT on increasing our margins at the expense of performance. We know the importance of trust in building strong partnerships, and we work hard every day to earn that trust.

Committed Account Supervision

Our operating model is unique in the industry. The Matworks manages our services through dedicated Area QA Managers and QA Associates in the field. These managers are “account specific” – meaning they work only for their assigned customer and NOT on a territorial basis. This allows 100% focus on store service needs.

TEC Vision:

  • To be the catalyst to changing the industry
  • To be so good and so successful (in customer satisfaction, growth and profitability) that the industry copies our values and practices
  • …and we teach them how.

 TEC Mission:

  • To prove that our values and professionalism are the best way to manage.
  • To utilize the brains and hearts, in addition to the hands, of “our” technicians. To make them part of the team, provide them with honorable work and just reward. They will be the secret weapon of a truly great cleaning company.
  • To change this industry. To be the catalyst. To be so good and so successful (in growth and profitability) that the industry copies our values and practices…and we teach them how.
  • We succeed where others have failed through a unique philosophy and operating strategy that truly makes a difference.

Grid Entrance Systems: Solutions for High Traffic and Heavy Loads

One of the most frequent questions we get is what is the right entrance system? The answer is not a straightforward as you would think. Not only does your entrance create a first impression but will also help maintain your design aesthetic, add years to your floor’s life, significantly reduce maintenance costs and is critical to safety. Slip and fall injuries are serious for consumers and businesses alike. Installing an effective and appropriate entrance system can dramatically reduce the potential for slip hazards while preventing dirt and moisture from being tracked in.

Investing in a grid system provides the best long-term solution for entrances where there is high traffic or heavy loads such as grocery stores, commercial buildings, hotels and healthcare facitlities. These products are designed for entrances that receive repetitive, heavy foot and cart traffic and offer safety, cleaning and noise reduction benefits while withstanding consistent abuse.

While grid systems give the appearance of being rigid and heavy, many are designed to roll up or be removed easily to allow for cleaning. Additionally, because there are so many size options, grid systems are incredibly versatile and reduce maintenance costs by allowing for sections to be replaced versus the entire installation. Matworks Proscraper can even be flipped after years of use, doubling the life of the grid.

We offer a number of options for grid systems such as Proscraper, Powerlinks, Design Links, Reese and Nystrom to name a few. Please find additional information on our website in the Product Solutions section.

Mats: The Benefit of Buying vs. Renting

The Matworks began nearly 50 years ago as a mat rental and laundering company and for many years this was the primary service we offered our national retail customers. As our business and the needs of our customers evolved, so too did the mat rental business. Matworks began working with global suppliers and market leaders who had the ability to produce quality commercial products that could last for years. With high quality and value engineering in mind, we worked closely with our customers to determine that buying a high quality dense fiber product was much more cost effective than renting.

Here’s what we learned after 25 years in the rental business and another 25 selling high quality purchased mats:

Cost Savings

  • We estimate the cost to rent one 4’ x 6’ mat with a standard three-year contract is approximately $800 annually. Most companies require more than one mat, multiply this times several mats and you’re looking at several thousand dollars. Compared to the investment in purchasing a high-quality, durable mat such as Matworks Zephyr, Monster, Dreadnought, Preference or Ambassador, the difference is certain.
  • A recent ROI analysis for a grocery chain produced an $800k savings over a three-year period. Additionally, purchased mats come with a warranty, will not shrink, wrinkle, curl or become trip hazards.

Selection

  • Some mat rentals companies may not stock a variety of colors and sizes. If your organization’s aesthetic or functional requirements are not standard you will be forced to pick from a limited selection.

Safety & Quality

  • Rental mats tend to stay in circulation for many years, thus reducing the quality. They can break down with constant washing; the hot water and chemicals can have an effect on the durability of the fiber. Throughout years of circulation, dirt and water can be tracked into the building, necessitating more maintenance and potential safety hazards.
  • When renting multiple mats from the same company you could receive mats in completely different conditions. Some may not be exactly the same size, causing tripping hazards.

Investing in high quality mats from a company who has been designing and manufacturing product for national retailers for nearly 50 years is more cost-effective long term, while reinforcing the image of your brand.

Pharmacy Flooring: Leading the Way in Employee Productivity and Comfort

Over 20 years ago, Matworks was asked by one of their key national customers to help develop a solution for their pharmacists, who often stand for over 10 hours a day. Matworks was built on finding innovative solutions for our customers to help them improve employee productivity and comfort so naturally, we jumped at the opportunity to help.

Pharmacists spend hours walking between compounding areas, computer terminals and service counters. Rarely do we walk into a pharmacy and see the pharmacist or their techs sitting while dispensing medication. This extended standing time contributes to stress on their back, fatigue and pain in various extremities. In a study by the Journal of the American Medical Association (http://jamanetwork.com) 13% of all workers who experience pain in the workplace say this reduces their productivity levels.

Employers recognize the obligation they have to provide solutions for their employees that will enable them to leave work in the same manner in which they arrived. One of Matworks customers recently shared, “Creating a safe and healthy environment not only provides a significant ROI but it is our moral obligation”; we couldn’t agree more.

The right anti-fatigue pharmacy flooring can reduce or eliminate fatigue — along with related health and safety hazards, while improving worker productivity. PreferenceEze and PharmaEze are two options Matworks has developed, both widely used in over 4,000 pharmacies nationally. PreferenceEze is a needle punch fiber top surface with foam backing that can be used as a runner or wall-to-wall. PharmaEze is a puzzle cut black foam rubber product made of a unique two-piece construction.

The use of anti-fatigue solutions helps improve worker productivity and eliminate many of the work-related health problems caused by standing in one location for long periods of time. Making use of these systems is an important part of the big picture when it comes to improving worker productivity and reducing employer costs.

Product Spotlight: What is Monster Tile?

Experts and consumers alike agree – the right entrance system in a retail environment is critical to the overall appearance and first impression for customers. Choosing the right product for your environment will efficiently and cost effectively reduce the amount of dirt and debris tracked into the store. This will enhance your brand and save time and money in cleaning and maintenance costs.

The Matworks listened to customers we’ve had for over 30 years and worked with our manufacturing partners. We set out to find a solution that would stand up to the toughest environments. Monster Tile was developed by the Matworks product development team as one of our most durable and versatile entrance solutions. It’s comprised of a high-density fiber bonded surface, at least 40% heavier than products you see on the market today. Monster Tiles strip away dirt and debris while absorbing excess moisture, making it perfect for the heaviest high-traffic entrances.

Monster Tiles are available in a variety of colors and two sizes: 19.7” x 19.7”and 39.4” x 39.4”, they can be recessed or floor-mounted and rotated using Matworks pressure sensitive releasable adhesive or TacFast non-permanent fastening system.
